Bridging the Gap Between Fashion & Compassion

An interview with Natalie Daghestani, co-founder and creative director of Dubai-based luxury vegan brand, Eurthlin

Tell us who you are, where you are from and the name of your brand.

My name is Natalie Daghestani, I was born in South Wales, UK but grew up in Dubai. I am the co-founder and creative director of Dubai-based luxury vegan brand, Eurthlin.

How did your journey into launching a vegan brand start?

I committed to a personal 30-day plant-based diet challenge back in 2017, to see if I could improve my health. I then watched the documentary Earthlings, and everything changed. It was no longer about me. I was in floods of tears, totally heartbroken, and angry at myself for being oblivious to the suffering I was causing other sentient beings and our Earth with my diet, fashion, and lifestyle choices.

Instead of feeling helpless and angry at all the things I couldn't do, I focused on what I could do - starting in the kitchen. I switched to an entirely plant-based diet, and it all began from there. I next cleared my closet of all my leather pieces, donating or selling the more valuable pieces, and went in search of a new brand that aligned with my new ethos but still had a similar aesthetic to the brands I previously wore and cherished. I spoke with other vegans who were holding on to their designer leather goods and realised there was little or no incentive for them to move away from buying traditional leather pieces if there was no similar vegan alternative. It was at this point I immediately spotted a gap in the market and began working on the concept of Eurthlin.

My partner Cobus and I have now both been living a vegan lifestyle since 2017, launching Eurthlin in 2019. The documentary Earthlings changed our lives and inspired both our brand concept and its name. We are both incredibly proud to be a vegan founded company.

Tell us about your brand and its mission.

Inspired by the unspoiled beauty of the Earth, Eurthlin bridges the gap between fashion and compassion through our range of premium vegan handbags and pouches. Each bag in our collection is expertly and ethically crafted with sustainability in mind, using the highest quality vegan materials, offering the ultimate in contemporary, cruelty-free luxury.

We believe that animals are not materials, and we should look to nature for inspiration, not exploitation. Our luxurious vegan leathers have been carefully selected and designed to reflect these core values.

Our mission is to enable conscious consumers to have the best of both worlds. They no longer need to choose between cruelty-free or a classic, luxury designed look. Eurthlin designs timeless, signature printed luxury bags to cater to both the fashion and eco-conscious consumers.

What exactly is vegan leather?

Vegan leather (also known as faux leather) looks and feels like genuine leather but simply put, is not made from the skin or hides of deceased animals. There are various types of vegan leather, the most commonly used vegan leathers are made from a polymer known as polyurethane (PU) which is durable, lightweight, flexible, waterproof and available in a variety of grades. Many other sustainable materials can be processed to imitate leather such as cork, fruit peels, and even pineapple leaves.

What makes your brand unique?

Our signature print, inspired by the four classic elements - fire, water, earth, and air, makes our pieces instantly recognizable and stands out from other vegan brands. I wanted to create a signature print that was recognizable at a glance, classic in style but still embodied our message - which ultimately is to respect all life, earthlings, and our earth.

As an environmentally conscious and cruelty-free label, Eurthlin is also proudly registered with The Vegan Society and is PETA-Approved Vegan. Our bags are cruelty-free, without compromising on quality or style.

Tell us a bit about your collection.

The first collection to launch is Terra (Latin for Earth), an elegant yet highly functional collection of signature printed vegan Saffiano leather pouches, shoulder, cross body, and tote bags that are all compatible with each other. We have four colorways Onyx (black), Sandstone (cream), Bark (dark brown) and Pebble (light grey) all inspired by the unspoiled beauty of the Earth. Each bag in our collection is expertly and ethically crafted with sustainability in mind, using the highest quality vegan materials, offering the ultimate in contemporary cruelty-free luxury.

Who are your customers?

Our customers appreciate luxury fashion, have a classic sense of style, are eco-minded and want to live more ethically and sustainably. They are compassionate, open to change and are consciously making more thoughtful purchases, investing in companies that are working differently to better our planet and all who live on it.

What's your take on sustainability?

I feel everyone needs to do what they can - and more! Before choosing to live vegan, I recycled, used reusable shopping bags, switched off the lights and AC when not in a room and thought I was doing my bit for the planet.

However, when I dug deeper, I learned that animal agriculture is the second-largest contributor to human-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions after fossil fuels and is a leading cause of deforestation, water, and air pollution and biodiversity loss. Choosing to consume animal products - or wear them - comes at a substantial cost to the environment. The thought that we need to feed 70 billion livestock and 7 billion humans per year is just crazy. Imagine a world where we just had to feed 7 billion humans per year.

Animal agriculture is also responsible for up to 91% of Amazon rainforest destruction. Not only is land required to raise these animals, but it is also needed to grow their feed - a hugely inefficient use of resources. Put into context, animal farming provides just 18% of calories but takes up 83% of our farmland. This is why when you choose to buy any of our vegan leather bags, we have pledged to plant one tree in the Amazon for every piece sold in collaboration with to assist with reforestation.

We use vegan (faux) leathers instead of animal leathers as they are aesthetically similar and do not require the killing of animals or the use of land to raise them. We use GOTS-certified organic cotton for our linings, which is made from natural seeds without the use of pesticides or other harmful chemicals. Our dust bags are made from recycled plastic bottles (rPET) and our mailer pouches are home compostable.

My belief is by adopting a plant-based diet and choosing animal-free fashion is one way we can live more ethically and sustainably.

Where do you go for inspiration?

Outside! Living in the UAE gives us access to the most beautiful desert dunes, mountains, dams, beaches, palms, flora, and fauna. Before corona restricted us to stay home, I enjoyed cycling outside on the Al Qudra Bike Track. The track heads deep into the desert with oryx, gazels, camels and so many different breeds of birds along the way. The soft colors and natural textures are a huge source of inspiration for my designs, and I feel so calm and at peace when immersed in nature.
